Amalaki Ekadashi
Amalaki Ekadashi falls during the Shukla Paksha of the Phalguna month.
Meaning and Significance
'Amalaki' refers to the Amla tree (Indian Gooseberry). It is believed that Lord Vishnu resides in the Amla tree. Worshiping the tree on this day is central to the ritual. It is considered the first celebration leading up to the festival of Holi.
The Legend
In a kingdom ruled by King Chaitraratha, everyone observed Amalaki Ekadashi. A hunter, while trying to steal from the temple, spent the night observing the fast and puja. In his next life, he was reborn as a powerful and virtuous king named Vasuratha due to this accidental merit.
