Meaning and Significance
Indira Ekadashi is unique because it falls during Pitru Paksha (the fortnight of ancestors). It is considered the most powerful day to provide salvation to one's deceased ancestors who might be suffering in lower realms due to their past sins.
The Legend
King Indrasena of Mahishmati was told by Sage Narada that his father was stuck in Yama's realm. The sage advised the King to observe Indira Ekadashi and dedicate the merit to his father. The King followed the instructions, and his father was instantly released and ascended to Vaikuntha.
