Bhogi is the first day of the four-day Pongal/Makar Sankranti festival. It is widely celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
Significance
Bhogi is dedicated to Lord Indra, the god of rain and clouds. People offer prayers to Indra for a good harvest, abundance, and prosperity.
Rituals
- Bhogi Mantalu: The most important ritual where old and useless household items are discarded and burnt in a bonfire. This symbolizes the disposal of old habits and the arrival of a new beginning.
- Cleaning and Decoration: Houses are cleaned and decorated with colorful rangolis (Muggulu) and flowers.
- Bhogi Pallu: In South India, a mixture of seasonal fruits, berries, and coins is showered over children to protect them from the evil eye.
