Kanuma

Kanuma is the third day of the four-day Makar Sankranti festival. It is a day dedicated to cattle and the tools used in agriculture.

Significance

Farmers worship their cattle (bulls and cows) on this day, as they play a vital role in farming. It is a day of gratitude towards the animals that help provide food for humanity.

Rituals

  • Cattle Worship: Cattle are bathed, their horns are painted with bright colors, and they are decorated with garlands and bells.
  • Feasting: Special food is prepared, and families gather for a grand meal. Traditional games and bullock cart races are often organized in rural areas.
  • Gifts: It is common to give gifts and food to those who help in agricultural work.
