Jaya Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi

Jaya Ekadashi falls during the Shukla Paksha of the Magha month.

Meaning and Significance

'Jaya' means victory. This Ekadashi is celebrated for attaining victory over negative tendencies and low-vibrational energies (ghosts, demons, or bad habits). It is believed that observing this fast frees the soul from the possibility of being reborn in lower, non-human forms.

The Legend

A celestial singer named Malyavan and a dancer named Pushpavati committed an offense in the court of Lord Indra. Angry, Indra cursed them to become 'Pishachas' (ghosts) living in the cold Himalayas. On Jaya Ekadashi, they suffered from the cold and unknowingly fasted. Lord Vishnu was pleased, and they were restored to their divine forms.
