Papmochani Ekadashi

Papmochani Ekadashi

Papmochani Ekadashi is the final Ekadashi of the Hindu lunar year, falling during the Krishna Paksha of the Phalguna month (just before the New Year/Ugadi).

Meaning and Significance

'Pap' means sins and 'Mochani' means remover or deliverer. As the last Ekadashi of the year, it provides a final opportunity to wash away the sins of the entire past year and start the new year with a pure heart and soul.

The Legend

Sage Medhavi was distracted from his penance by a celestial nymph named Manjughosha. After living together for many years, the sage realized his spiritual loss and cursed the nymph. Both later repented and observed the Papmochani Ekadashi fast as advised by the sage's father, Sage Chyavana. Both were freed from their sins and regained their divine radiance.
