Devshayani Ekadashi

Shayani Ekadashi (Devshayani)

Shayani Ekadashi, also known as Devshayani Ekadashi or Ashadhi Ekadashi, falls during the Shukla Paksha of the Ashadha month.

Meaning and Significance

'Shayani' means "sleeping." It is believed that Lord Vishnu begins his four-month cosmic sleep (Yoga Nidra) on this day. He sleeps on the Shesha Naaga (celestial serpent) in the Kshira Sagara (Ocean of Milk). This marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a holy four-month period dedicated to penance, austerity, and spiritual growth.

Pandharpur Wari

In Maharashtra, this day is celebrated with immense fervor as the conclusion of the Pandharpur Wari. Millions of devotees (Varkaris) reach the temple of Lord Vitthal (a form of Vishnu) after walking hundreds of miles.
