Shashthi

Shashthi Tithi

Shashthi is the sixth day of the lunar fortnight. It is a day of power, victory over internal and external enemies, and the protection of righteousness.

Symbolism and Meaning

Shashthi represents the six directions and the balance needed to maintain authority. It is a day characterized by martial energy and the courage to fight for what is right.

Ruling Deity: Kartikeya (Commander of Gods)

The presiding deity of Shashthi is Lord Kartikeya (Skanda/Murugan), the commander-in-chief of the divine army. Kartikeya is the destroyer of the demon Taraka and represents the perfect union of intellect and strength. Worshipping him on this day (as in Skanda Shashthi) grants the courage to overcome difficult competitors and the discipline to achieve mastery over one's senses.

Auspicious Activities

  • Victory: Tackling competitive tasks or starting litigation.
  • Protection: Seeking the welfare of children (Shashthi is often seen as a protector of infants).
  • Jewelry: Buying ornaments or gold.
  • Action: Starting projects that require physical or mental vigor.
