Lord Kartikeya

Lord Kartikeya

Kartikeya, also known as Murugan, Skanda, or Subrahmanya, is the Hindu god of war and the commander-in-chief of the army of the devas (gods). He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and the brother of Lord Ganesha.

  • The Vel (Spear): His primary weapon, given by his mother Parvati. It represents spiritual knowledge and the destruction of ignorance.
  • The Peacock: His vehicle, symbolizing the mastery over the ego and pride. The peacock is also known for destroying serpents, which represent negative tendencies.
  • Youthful Form: He is often depicted as a beautiful, young warrior, reflecting the vigor of the divine.

Popularity in South India

Kartikeya is extremely popular in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu, where he is worshipped as Lord Murugan. The Six Abodes of Murugan (Arupadaiveedu) are major pilgrimage sites.
