Goddess Parvati

Goddess Parvati

Parvati is the Hindu goddess of fertility, love, beauty, harmony, marriage, and children. She is the consort of Lord Shiva and the mother of Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya. She represents the gentle and nurturing aspect of Shakti (Divine Energy).

Origins

Parvati is considered the reincarnation of Sati, Shiva's first wife. She was born as the daughter of Himavat (the king of the Himalayas) and Mena. Through intense penance and devotion, she won the heart of the ascetic Shiva and brought him into the life of a householder.

Iconography and Symbolism

Parvati is often depicted alongside Shiva in the Uma-Maheshwara form.

  • Two Arms: When shown alone, she often holds a blue lotus.
  • Lion or Tiger: Her vehicle, representing her power and mastery over nature.
  • Trishula and Mirror: Sometimes shown with Shiva's trident or a mirror representing her beauty.

Forms of Parvati

Parvati is the source of all other goddesses. Her powerful forms include:

  • Durga: The warrior goddess who slays demons.
  • Kali: The fierce goddess of time and transformation.
  • Lalita Tripurasundari: The beautiful goddess of the three worlds.

Major Festivals

  • Gauri Habba / Gauri Puja: Celebrated a day before Ganesh Chaturthi.
  • Navaratri: While dedicated to all forms of the Devi, Parvati's presence is central.
  • Teej: Primarily celebrated in North India and Nepal to commemorate her union with Shiva.

Spiritual Aspect

Parvati represents the power of determination and the importance of balancing worldly duties with spiritual goals. She is the bridge between the ascetic and the householder.
