Saphala Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Margashirsha month (or Pausha in some calendars).

Meaning and Significance

'Saphala' means "fruitful" or "successful." This Ekadashi is known for making every endeavor of the devotee successful. It is said that even a person who has lived a sinful life can attain success and heaven by observing this fast with a sincere heart.

The Legend

Lumbaka, the sinful son of King Mahishmana, was exiled to the forest. On Saphala Ekadashi, he unknowingly fasted and offered fruits to Lord Vishnu while suffering from cold and hunger. Lord Vishnu was pleased by his accidental penance, restored his kingdom, and eventually granted him liberation.
