Utpanna Ekadashi
Utpanna Ekadashi is observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Kartika month (or Margashirsha in some calendars).
Meaning and Significance
'Utpanna' means "born" or "originated." This is the day when Goddess Ekadashi was born from the body of Lord Vishnu to defeat the demon Mura. It is considered the very first Ekadashi to be observed by anyone who wishes to start the Ekadashi Vrat cycle.
The Birth of Ekadashi
Lord Vishnu was fighting the demon Mura. During a brief rest, a divine lady emerged from the Lord’s radiance and killed the demon. Pleased, Vishnu named her 'Ekadashi' and declared that anyone who fasts on her birth anniversary will be freed from all sins.
