Chaturdashi

Chaturdashi Tithi

Chaturdashi is the fourteenth day of the lunar fortnight, occurring just before the Full Moon (Purnima) or New Moon (Amavasya). It is a "Rikta" (empty) Tithi, characterized by intense, transformative, and often volatile energy.

Symbolism and Meaning

Chaturdashi symbolizes the final dissolution before a new phase. It is a day of deep spiritual intensity and the facing of one's shadows. Because of its "Rikta" nature, it is generally considered unsuitable for mundane beginnings like marriage or business, but it is exceptionally powerful for esoteric spiritual practices and seeking protection.

Ruling Deity: Lord Shiva (Rudra)

The presiding deity of Chaturdashi is Lord Shiva in his fierce aspect as Rudra. This Tithi is the home of Maha Shivaratri (the Great Night of Shiva) and the monthly Masa Shivaratri. It is a day for total surrender to the Divine and the destruction of the ego. Narak Chaturdashi (during Diwali) also commemorates the victory over negative forces.

Auspicious Activities

  • Cleansing: Rituals to remove negative energy, "evil eye," or black magic.
  • Overcoming Enemies: Strategies to deal with intense opposition or deep-seated fears.
